John Goodman Credits Devoted Wife Of 33 Years For Rescuing Him From Addiction

John Goodman, renowned for his versatile acting career spanning over 160 productions, has left an indelible mark on both film and television. Notably, his role as Dan Conner in “Roseanne” garnered him a Golden Globe Award, solidifying his status as a classic family man both on and off-screen. However, behind the scenes, Goodman grappled with alcoholism, exacerbated by the pressures of fame. Reflecting on his struggle, Goodman acknowledged, “It was life or death. It was time to stop.”

His journey to sobriety was bolstered by his wife of 33 years, Annabeth Hartzog. Goodman recounted a pivotal moment when he realized the extent of his addiction, prompting him to seek help. “She made some phone calls and she got me into a treatment center,” he recalled gratefully. Alongside overcoming alcoholism, Goodman embarked on a weight loss journey, shedding over 100 pounds through disciplined lifestyle changes.

Despite the challenges, Goodman’s enduring marriage stands as a testament to love and support. From their serendipitous meeting at a Halloween party to Goodman’s romantic proposal on the banks of the Mississippi River, their bond has remained steadfast. Today, as they navigate life together in New Orleans, Goodman and Hartzog’s enduring partnership continues to inspire.
