NOAA confirmed a major G3 geomagnetic storm struck late Sunday night, followed by a G2 storm today. “Think of it like a hurricane for Earth’s magnetic field,” experts said. These storms can cause grid fluctuations, satellite issues, and radio blackouts.
Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service saw massive outages overnight, with more than 50,000 reports from users. Problems stretched from Missouri to New York, and some lasted over an hour.

The activity may continue until 2 p.m. ET and could be felt in Alaska, Montana, Minnesota, Michigan, and other northern states. The storms were caused by a solar eruption on September 11.
While most Americans won’t notice major effects, northern skywatchers may see brilliant auroras. “Go somewhere dark and face north,” NOAA advised.
