Mariah Carey earned the title “Queen of Christmas” long ago, and by November her songs fill malls everywhere, whether people ask for them or not. However, nonstop holiday cheer can feel very different inside her own home.
Her 1994 song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” set a Guinness World Record in 2019 for the highest-charting holiday song by a solo artist on the Billboard Hot 100. Each year, the song also earns an estimated $2.5 million to $3 million in royalties.
In 2023, Carey shared a playful Instagram video showing that her twins, Monroe and Moroccan, are “sick” of hearing the song. She stood by a Christmas tree in a red, Santa-style jumpsuit, while the kids wore black and looked far from festive.
“Mom, please, we don’t want to do this every time!” they said, as Carey insisted she was just being festive. She then started singing the opening line, which sent the kids walking off camera in mock frustration.
Carey later explained the clip was only a skit and wrote, “Had to do it. Merry Christmas Eve!!” Even so, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” keeps making history, hitting its 16th total week at No. 1 on December 16, tying for the third-longest reign ever, celebrating its 30th anniversary, and standing as one of the longest-running No. 1 songs by a woman artist, which Carey has called one of her greatest achievements.
