Minnesota is in shock after a deadly shooting claimed the lives of State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. Early Saturday morning, they were fatally shot at home in what officials call a politically motivated attack.
Just hours earlier, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot multiple times but survived emergency surgery. Governor Tim Walz described the incidents as an “assassination attempt” and confirmed that Hoffman and his wife are recovering.
Police say the suspect pretended to be an officer and opened fire on real officers during a confrontation before fleeing. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are now searching for the shooter. Residents are urged to verify any unexpected visits from people claiming to be police.
Hortman, a dedicated leader, served 11 terms and championed issues like education and renewable energy. Her husband was a respected tech professional. Their deaths have sparked grief and calls for unity. President Biden condemned the attack, saying, “We must unite against political violence.”
