Just days before tragedy struck, 8-year-old Blakely McCrory sent a joyful letter to her mom from Camp Mystic in Texas. She described her excitement, love for horseback riding, and the fun she was having—words that would soon become a heartbreaking final message.
Blakely was among several campers who lost their lives in a devastating July 4 flash flood when the Guadalupe River overflowed. Her mother, Lindsey McCrory, now clings to the letter as a precious reminder of her daughter’s final days filled with happiness.
This was Blakely’s first time at the Christian camp, following in the footsteps of her mother, stepsisters, and grandmother. Lindsey, who was vacationing in Europe during the flood, initially wasn’t concerned—until she received a message confirming Blakely was missing.
After a tense search and public prayers, Lindsey learned that her daughter had died. Despite the pain, she found peace knowing Blakely was now with her late father, who had passed just months earlier.
Described as funny, resilient, and full of life, Blakely had a calming influence on others—even encouraging fellow campers during the storm.
As tributes pour in for other young lives lost, Blakely’s letter remains a symbol of joy, faith, and the enduring bond between a mother and daughter. “She’s close to me,” Lindsey said. “I know she’s watching.”
