A mum has slammed her council as “despicable” after being fined for taking her son out of school. Michelle Partington, from Wigan, said she and her husband were shocked when they each received an £80 penalty.
The couple took 12-year-old Oliver to Egypt for a once-in-a-lifetime trip, which cost £3,270. Michelle argued the holiday was educational, pointing to Egypt’s history. “It was magical. We couldn’t afford it in the school holidays,” she said.
Oliver had recently moved schools because of bullying, and Michelle hoped the holiday would lift his spirits. But the fine forced the family to cancel other summer plans. “It was devastating,” she admitted. “Spending time together as a family is just as important for children’s wellbeing.”
