My Daughter Forbade Me from Attending Her Graduation Due To Her Dad’s Ultimatum

A woman in her 40s shared her story on the “AITA” subreddit about her strained relationship with her 18-year-old daughter, B. Despite being close during B’s early years, her father became distant after remarrying, leaving B feeling abandoned and rebellious. B, who had been in therapy, appeared to be coping well.

As B’s graduation approached, she wanted her father and his son to attend. However, her father issued an ultimatum that her mother could not be present if he came. Feeling hurt, the woman expressed her anger. B explained, “I’m sorry, but I’m not changing my mind,” leading to a heated argument.

On graduation day, B was in tears because her father had abandoned her again. The woman comforted her, but B accused her mother of being a “bad mom” for not attending. The woman stood by her decision, feeling it was essential to teach her daughter that actions have consequences.

The woman regretted her decision, questioning if it was too harsh. A fellow school mom’s comment about B’s apparent depression weighed heavily on her conscience. In an update, the woman shared that B continued prioritizing her father, even after he accused B of stalking and threatening his family. The woman, now in therapy, began to find some relief and started rebuilding her life.
