Millions use gel nail polish every week, but a key ingredient has now been banned in Europe.
From September 1, the EU outlawed TPO (trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide) after studies linked it to fertility problems. Salons across 27 member states must stop using TPO-based gels and safely dispose of old stock. “The industry could not defend its safety,” experts explained.

TPO helps polish harden under UV light, keeping manicures glossy and long-lasting. But health officials warn the chemical may harm reproductive health and could linger in the body. Professor Katie Burns cautioned, “These chemicals stay in fat tissue for years and may trigger serious health issues.”
The UK and US have not yet banned TPO, though experts believe similar rules may come later. Some industry voices argue the ban is too harsh and will hurt small businesses, but others say safety must come first.

The debate continues, but one thing is clear: beauty should never come at the cost of health.
