North Andover officer Kelsey Fitzsimmons, 28, is recovering after being shot during an armed confrontation with fellow officers. The incident occurred just hours after her fiancé, Justin Aylaian, obtained a restraining order, fearing she might harm their infant son or herself.
Court records revealed disturbing behavior, including past threats and violent outbursts. Aylaian claimed Fitzsimmons once punched her own pregnant belly and recently assaulted him in Maine. He warned police in advance of her possible reaction to the order.
On June 30, three officers arrived at her home to serve the court order. Fitzsimmons, who was off duty, allegedly became confrontational. One officer fired, hitting her in the chest. She was airlifted to a Boston hospital and is in stable condition.
Fitzsimmons had a history of postpartum depression and had previously surrendered her firearms. Her return to duty was approved in June, though she remained on leave. The case has drawn heavy social media attention and sparked criticism of department oversight. An official investigation is ongoing to determine what went wrong and whether proper procedures were followed.
