Nicki Minaj deportation petitions explained as over 120,000 people sign amid backlash

Two online petitions calling for Nicki Minaj to be deported from the US have gained traction, with more than 120,000 signatures combined. The push comes after a wave of backlash from some former fans on social media.

The 43-year-old rapper has recently shown public support for conservative figures, including Donald Trump. Anger grew further after she appeared as a surprise guest at a Turning Point USA event in December, where she shared the stage with Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

One petition on Change.org has collected over 46,000 signatures. A second has more than 87,000. Both call for Minaj to be sent to Trinidad and Tobago, where she was born.

The petitions also point to Minaj’s past comments about her immigration status. In a 2018 Instagram post, she said she came to the US “as an illegal immigrant” at age five. During a 2024 TikTok live, she said she never officially became a US citizen.

Despite the online pressure, the petitions are unlikely to lead to action. The report says Minaj holds a green card, which gives permanent US residency. It also notes that the ACLU has said people cannot be deported simply for expressing opinions, because speech is protected under the First Amendment, regardless of immigration status.
