Twelve-year-old Nico Antic remains alive in hospital after being attacked by a shark in Sydney Harbour. A close family member has confirmed that although his heart is still beating, his brain is no longer responsive and he is not expected to wake up.
The incident happened on Sunday afternoon at Nielsen Park. Nico was jumping into the water with friends when he was attacked. He suffered severe injuries but was pulled to safety by one of his friends, allowing emergency crews to reach him quickly.
Family members describe Nico as a happy and active child who loved sport and brought joy to those around him. They have asked for privacy as they face an extremely difficult time. They also confirmed that earlier reports of his death were incorrect.
Friends have set up a fundraiser to help the family with medical and travel costs, as some relatives live overseas and are traveling to Australia to be with him. Nico’s soccer club also shared messages of support, remembering him as a dedicated and talented young player.
The attack comes amid increased shark activity in New South Wales, prompting beach closures and safety warnings. Authorities continue to urge people to stay out of affected waters.
