Noel Gallagher, former Oasis frontman, misgendered pop star Sam Smith and called them a “f***ing idiot” during a radio interview. Smith, a Grammy-winning artist known for hits like “Stay With Me” and “Unholy,” recently caused a stir with their “satanic” performance at the Grammys and an inflatable jumpsuit at the Brit Awards.
During his appearance on Dutch radio station Kink, Gallagher criticized modern pop music, stating, “Pop music is alright if the pop stars are cool. Sadly the stars of today are f***ing idiots.” When asked specifically who he was referring to, Gallagher replied, “Sam Smith,” and further commented, “Look at him!”
This is not the first time Smith has faced public mockery. After their Brit Awards appearance, Piers Morgan tweeted, “Methinks ‘they’ is getting a teeny weeny bit over-thirsty for attention.” Despite backlash, comedian Ricky Gervais also mocked Smith by photoshopping his head onto Smith’s outfit, leading to further criticism.
Fans defended Smith, with one saying, “That’s the goal for celebs at these events. They all want to stand out. Good on them.” Another commented, “This stuff happened in your generation too. You do know that, grandpa?”
