Outbreak of deadly virus with no cure and ‘epidemic potential’ reported in India as officials issue severe warning

Indian health officials are working to contain an outbreak of the Nipah virus in West Bengal. Currently, five healthcare workers are infected, with one in critical condition. This virus is considered a high-priority threat by the World Health Organization because it has no known cure or vaccine.

The virus typically causes flu-like symptoms, such as fever, headache, and muscle pain. In severe cases, it can lead to respiratory distress or life-threatening brain swelling. Statistics show that the virus is particularly dangerous, with a fatality rate ranging from 40% to 75%.

Nipah is a zoonotic illness, meaning it spreads from animals to humans. Previous outbreaks have been linked to fruit bats and pigs. Humans can become infected through direct contact with sick animals, consuming contaminated food, or through close contact with an infected person.

To prevent infection, authorities urge the public to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly. It is also vital to avoid eating fruit that appears partially eaten by animals or drinking raw date palm juice. Regular handwashing with soap and water remains a primary defense against the spread of the disease.

While no cases have been reported in the UK, global health agencies are monitoring the situation closely. Over 100 people in India are currently under observation to ensure the outbreak does not escalate into a larger epidemic.
