‘Ozempic vulva’ explained as women share their experience with little-known side effect

Women taking Ozempic have begun sharing a little-known side effect nicknamed “Ozempic vulva.” The diabetes drug, often used for weight loss, may cause unexpected changes to vaginal health.

Some women report sagging or discomfort due to rapid fat loss in the vulva area. One patient wrote: “My gynecologist said I lost all my fat pads in my vulva. It’s saggy and painful when I bike or sit.” Doctors confirm this can happen when the body sheds fat too quickly.

Gynecologists warn that Ozempic’s effects may go beyond weight changes. “GLP-1 medications can potentially impact vaginal health in unexpected ways,” explained Dr. Melanie Bone. These may include dryness, reduced lubrication, more infections, or changes in the vaginal microbiome. Dehydration and hormone shifts may also play a role.

Treatment options vary, from pelvic floor therapy to surgery or simply regaining weight. While some women consider labiaplasty, experts caution about risks such as scarring or loss of sensation.

Ozempic continues to grow in popularity, but its lesser-known side effects raise an important question: how much do we truly know about the hidden costs of rapid weight loss?
