Parents Warned About ‘Phubbing’ In Front Of Their Kids

Experts warn that the growing trend of “phubbing” may cause serious emotional harm to children.

What is Phubbing?

The term phubbing blends the words “phone” and “snubbing.” It describes ignoring a companion to use a smartphone. This often happens when parents check notifications during conversations. The term first appeared in 2012 during a special campaign. Many adults now feel they cannot go anywhere without their phones.

Emotional Impact on Kids

Phubbing can leave young children feeling rejected and dismissed. Psychologist Mary Alvord says children may feel inadequate and lonely. They often internalize this dismissal and feel very insignificant. Then they might isolate themselves to cope with these feelings. Some kids act out negatively just to get any attention.

Risks of Depression

Research shows a link between emotional neglect and mental health. One study found that neglect leads to more depressive symptoms at 18. However, strong social support helps reduce these symptoms. Phubbing sends a message that the child is not important. Later, this can lead to deep feelings of sadness or anxiety.

Harming Adult Relationships

This behavior does not only affect parent and child bonds. It also harms satisfaction in romantic relationships. A Turkish study found that phone use reduces relationship quality. Faruk Caner Yam says couples must raise awareness about device use. Finally, experts suggest putting phones away to build better connections.
