A passenger was injured after a waterslide shattered on the world’s biggest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas. The Royal Caribbean vessel had departed Miami on August 2 for a week-long trip when the accident happened on August 7.
According to witnesses, a male guest was cut by a jagged hole in the 46ft-tall Frightening Bolt Waterslide. “Stop the slide! Stop the slide!” passengers shouted as water gushed from the broken panel. Royal Caribbean confirmed the guest suffered cuts from “acrylic glass breaking off” while riding. He was treated by the ship’s medical team and is in stable condition.
The slide and part of deck 15 were closed for investigation. No one fell through the hole, and no one on the ground was hurt. “The waterslide is closed for the remainder of the sailing pending an investigation,” the company said.
The Icon of the Seas features the largest waterpark at sea, with six record-breaking slides. This latest incident follows other safety concerns, including a passenger falling from an infinity pool and a crew member going overboard in recent months.
