A photo of a plus-sized passenger struggling to fit between plane armrests has sparked a fierce argument about who should solve the problem. However, people disagreed on whether obese travelers should pay for more space or airlines should change seats.
A fellow traveler took the photo as the man squeezed into an aisle seat on a Monday flight from Helsinki to Copenhagen. On Facebook, the photographer said he felt sorry for the man and the middle-seat passenger, and asked airlines to handle this “thoughtfully and sensitively.”

He also wrote that the larger passenger was “protruding into the aisle,” forcing others to squeeze past him on the way to the bathroom. As a result, some commenters said the man should buy a second seat because a passenger buys a set amount of space.
Others argued that buying another seat is a safety requirement, not discrimination, and some suggested a single-seat weight limit tied to seat size or class. Meanwhile, several people described buying extra seats themselves, choosing business class, or knowing larger travelers who bought two seats, or even three.

On the other hand, other commenters said airlines and plane makers should increase seat sizes as people get bigger over generations. Therefore, they argued airlines treat passengers like “livestock,” and they shared stories of sitting sideways, trading turns standing in the aisle, or avoiding reclining because crew did nothing, while one person praised Spirit Airlines for “big front seats” that cost only a bit more when booked early.
