Some family disagreements stay tucked away, but others find their way into the light. Prince Harry’s memoir Spare brought one of those moments forward, sharing the private messages exchanged between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton just days before the Sussexes’ 2018 wedding. What began as a small dress issue soon grew into something much heavier.

Harry explains that Kate first texted Meghan to say Princess Charlotte’s flower girl dress was “too big” and had made her cry. Meghan reassured her that a tailor was waiting at Kensington Palace and could fix everything quickly. She gently asked Kate to bring Charlotte in, just as the other mothers had already done.
The turning point came when Kate insisted the dresses be remade instead of altered. Meghan, already overwhelmed by the drama surrounding her father at the time, reminded Kate of the stress she was under. Still, Kate held firm, saying the wedding was only four days away.

Harry writes that Meghan tried again to resolve things, encouraging Kate to visit the tailor who had been waiting all day. Kate eventually replied with a curt “Fine,” but the exchange left Meghan in tears. Harry recalls coming home to find her sobbing on the floor.
Months later, tabloids claimed Meghan had made Kate cry, flipping the story entirely. During a private meeting, Harry says Kate admitted she had been the one to upset Meghan, but little was done to correct the public narrative. The couple felt stunned and betrayed when they learned the rumor may have started within the family itself.

Looking back, Meghan told Oprah she forgave Kate, but what hurt most was being blamed for something she didn’t do. It was a reminder of how quickly misunderstandings can grow—and how silence can sometimes speak louder than the truth.
