Pope Francis’ funeral took place on April 26, drawing over 250,000 mourners to St. Peter’s Square. The 88-year-old passed away on Easter Monday due to a stroke and heart failure. Leaders worldwide traveled to Rome to honor him.
During the service, Sister Genevieve Jeanningros, a French-Argentine nun and longtime friend of Pope Francis, was seen standing near his coffin in a restricted area usually reserved for clergy. She was allowed to break protocol due to their close bond. In an emotional moment, she was captured wiping away tears. One social media user commented: “So she should. She was his friend.”
Pope Francis was buried with a “Rogito,” a document detailing his life, sealed inside a metal cylinder in his coffin. According to Vatican News, he was also buried with his pallium and coins and medals minted during his time as pontiff.
The Holy See described him in the Rogito as a “simple and much-loved shepherd,” reflecting the affection he inspired worldwide.
