First responders arrived at a Brentwood home on Sunday, December 14, after a 3:38 p.m. call for medical help. Inside, they discovered filmmaker Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, 68, dead. Authorities later said the couple suffered fatal stabbing injuries. Now police are investigating the case as an apparent homicide. So far, investigators have announced no arrest and named no suspect.

As the news spread, the family’s grief came into focus. Reiner’s eldest daughter, Tracy Reiner, spoke to NBC News and put raw shock into simple words. “I came from the greatest family ever,” she said. “I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.”
Tracy, an actress and mother of five, grew up in a blended Hollywood family. Reiner adopted her during his marriage to Penny Marshall. Later, Reiner built a long creative and personal partnership with Michele. The couple married in 1989 and raised three children together: Jake, Nick, and Romy. They also teamed up professionally on projects, including recent work tied to the Spinal Tap universe.

Meanwhile, tributes poured in. Governor Gavin Newsom called Reiner a “big-hearted genius.” Christopher Guest and Jamie Lee Curtis shared their grief and asked the public to center the couple’s children and loved ones.
