Tragic Loss
Roy Cooper, an eight-time world champion and ProRodeo Hall of Famer, was found dead inside his burning home in Decatur, Texas, on April 29, 2025. He was 69. First responders arrived within minutes but were unable to save him. “They immediately started to extinguish the fire and were notified that a victim may still be inside,” said Fire Marshal Jeff Doughty.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities, including the Texas Rangers and local fire officials, are still investigating the cause of the fire. Cooper’s body was sent to Dallas County for further examination. No other injuries were reported.

A Lasting Legacy
Known as the “Super Looper,” Cooper’s rodeo career spanned four decades. His sons Clif, Clint, and Tuf followed in his footsteps, with the family collectively earning 12 tie-down roping titles. “It is with great sadness that our family shares the passing of our Dad,” Tuf Cooper shared on Facebook.

Country star George Strait wrote, “We lost our good friend and my hero Roy Cooper yesterday.” Cooper’s honesty, humor, and dedication made him a legend — one who inspired generations of cowboys.
