A new study suggests that popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may lower the risk of dementia and stroke in people with type 2 diabetes and obesity. Researchers tracked over 60,000 people for seven years. Those using the jabs had a 37% lower risk of dementia and a 19% lower risk of stroke compared to others on standard diabetes medication.
“These drugs could offer more than just blood sugar control,” experts noted. Still, they warn that “more research is needed” to confirm these findings.

GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, are already approved for managing weight and diabetes. Around 1.5 million people currently use them, and their popularity continues to grow.
Type 2 diabetes is known to increase the risk of dementia due to high blood pressure, cholesterol, and insulin resistance in the brain. Scientists believe these injections could help protect the brain, but more trials are needed to see if the benefits extend to people without diabetes.
