Solo hiker, 46, killed by pack of mountain lions as terrifying CCTV footage shared

Kristen Marie Kovatch, 46, died while hiking alone on New Year’s Day in a remote area of Colorado. She was on the Crosier Mountain Trail when she was attacked by mountain lions. Other hikers later found her on the trail and alerted authorities.

The Investigation

Officials confirmed that Kovatch died after an attack involving at least two mountain lions. Wildlife officers later euthanized a male and a female lion believed to be involved. Testing found human DNA on one of the animals. Searches for additional lions have since ended.

Rare but Serious Risk

Mountain lion attacks on people are extremely rare in the United States. Over the past century, about 130 attacks have been recorded, with fewer than 30 resulting in death. Colorado, which has a large mountain lion population, has reported a small number of incidents over several decades.

Family Tribute

Kovatch’s family described her as an active and caring person who loved the outdoors. She worked for UCHealth for several years and was known as a dedicated professional and family member.

Safety Reminder

Wildlife experts stress that encounters are uncommon but advise hikers to stay alert, avoid hiking alone in remote areas, and know how to respond if they encounter a mountain lion.
