Sonja Semyonova, 45, says she has formed a deep emotional connection with an oak tree near her home. She describes herself as “ecosexual,” meaning she feels closeness and emotional fulfilment through nature rather than a traditional romantic partner.
Sonja says she has often felt lonely and that time spent with the tree has helped fill that gap. She explains that being near it gives her a sense of calm, safety, and support. For her, the bond is emotional and symbolic, not physical.
She moved to Vancouver Island in 2020 and began taking daily walks during lockdown. Over time, she noticed a growing sense of connection with a large oak tree she passed regularly. Leaning against it and observing the natural surroundings became a meaningful part of her routine.
Sonja says ecosexuality is often misunderstood. She stresses it does not involve sexual acts with nature. Instead, she describes it as feeling emotionally moved by the rhythms of the natural world, such as seasonal change, growth, and renewal.
She believes many people feel a similar pull toward nature without realising it. Sonja says recognising this connection could help people feel less isolated and develop greater respect and care for the environment.
