Valerie Mahaffey, the Emmy-winning actress best known for roles in Desperate Housewives, Sully, and Northern Exposure, has died at age 71. Her husband, Joseph Kell, confirmed she passed away at their Los Angeles home on May 30 after a battle with cancer.
“I have lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its most endearing actresses,” Kell shared.
Born in Indonesia, Mahaffey earned a Primetime Emmy in 1992 for her role as Eve in Northern Exposure. Her career began on Broadway and spanned decades, including performances in Young Sheldon and the Oscar-nominated Sully, where she played Diane Higgins, a plane crash survivor.
Her final film role was in The 8th Day, released in March 2025. She portrayed a mysterious character entwined in a story of crime and secrets in a small Texas town.

Reflecting on her craft, Mahaffey once said, “When you relax, stuff happens in the middle of a take… and it’s a huge gift.”
She leaves behind a legacy of grace, talent, and unforgettable performances.
