A 16-year-old girl from Italy, Maria Antonietta Cutillo, tragically died after her charging phone slipped into the bathtub while she was on a video call with a friend. The incident happened in her home in Avellino, while her family was away.
Reports say the phone caused a short circuit after falling into the water. Her friend, alarmed when the call cut off, quickly contacted emergency services. Sadly, it was too late. Maria’s body was taken to a local hospital for autopsy, and police launched an investigation.

Her grieving friend later posted a heartfelt tribute on TikTok: “You flew to heaven my love… I will never forget you screaming my name. I miss you, my heart.” The emotional post has drawn attention to the dangers of using electronics in water.
Though rare, electrocution by phone has claimed other lives. Similar incidents have occurred in France and Thailand, reminding us that charging devices near water can be fatal. Maria’s tragic story is a sobering warning about the hidden risks of everyday tech habits.
