A Tennessee mother had her leg amputated after her pet pit bull attacked her.
Dog Fight Turns Deadly
Amanda Mears, 42, was preparing to walk her dog named Dennis. Dennis was an American Pit Bull and Staffordshire mix. Suddenly, Dennis lunged at her other dog, Ralphie. Amanda tried to break up the fight between the animals. Then, Dennis clamped his jaws onto her leg and held on.
Fight for Survival
The mother screamed for her 10-year-old son to stay inside. She desperately tried to pry the dog’s mouth open. Finally, she used her other leg to choke the dog. This forced Dennis to release her limb. However, the attack crushed her arm and bit her hand.
Severe Leg Injuries
Amanda was rushed to a local hospital for emergency care. She could not stand because her leg was nearly detached. “I wasn’t able to stand up because my leg was basically hanging off.” Doctors said she needed 12 surgeries to save the limb. Amanda chose amputation to avoid two years of constant pain.
A Sad Farewell
Amanda raised Dennis from the time he was two weeks old. She also fosters other dogs that owners have abandoned. Later, she decided to have Dennis put down after the attack. “He was my best friend, and I raised him from two weeks old.” Now, a GoFundMe page helps her adjust to her new life.
