Blythe Danner, best known for her iconic roles in ’80s TV and Meet the Parents, has opened up about her private fight with adenoid cystic carcinoma — the same rare oral cancer that took her husband, Bruce Paltrow, in 2002. While working abroad in 2018, she noticed brain fog and a lump near her jaw — eerily close to where Bruce had once found his.
“I remember looking up and asking, ‘Are you lonely up there?’” Danner recalled. The Emmy-winning actress delayed telling her family, choosing instead to quietly undergo surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation. “I didn’t want them to worry,” she said. Even her daughter, Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow, was unaware at first. “It was scary,” Gwyneth shared, noting the uncanny similarity to her father’s illness.
After years of treatment and a final major surgery in 2020, Blythe entered remission. Now 82, she uses her platform to raise awareness through the Oral Cancer Foundation. “It’s a bit of a crapshoot — this disease and this life,” she said, “but I’m very grateful.”
