Three hikers found dead after jumping into waterfall at tourist hotspot as police release tragic details

Three men tragically died after jumping into Rattlesnake Falls in Soda Springs, California, on June 18. The hikers, part of a larger group, failed to resurface after entering the water. Others in their group were later rescued by helicopter from the remote area.

Placer County authorities launched an intense search using dive teams, helicopters, and rescue units. Poor weather and rugged terrain delayed efforts, forcing the search to pause before resuming on June 22 with improved conditions and additional equipment.

The deceased were identified as Matthew Schoenecker and Valentino Creus of Los Angeles, and Matthew Anthony of New York City. Volunteer diver Juan Heredia, who helped recover the bodies, shared the emotional toll: “The waterfall was brutal… but I wasn’t leaving without bringing those 3 souls home.”

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office offered condolences to the families, thanking the rescue teams for their tireless work. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to their families, friends, and all those affected by this tragic loss,” the department stated.
