It was supposed to be a quiet afternoon of chores — until a mother’s small mistake changed everything.
Four-year-old Luca de Groot was helping her mom, Jodi Lowe, with the laundry when the unthinkable happened. To keep her daughter occupied, Jodi handed her a laundry pod — the kind millions of families use every day. Within seconds, a loud scream shattered the moment.

“She bit into it before I could stop her,” Jodi said softly. “It burst into her eyes. She was in agony — and I couldn’t do anything.”
Panicking, Jodi rinsed Luca’s face and rushed her to the hospital. But the damage was already done. Doctors had to perform three surgeries, including an amniotic membrane transplant, after the chemicals caused severe burns and blisters. Luca spent 16 days in the hospital and has since lost vision in one eye.

“I never imagined something so small could do this,” Jodi said tearfully. “The packaging just says ‘seek medical advice.’ That’s not enough.”
Now, she’s calling for stronger warnings on laundry products sold under brands like Persil and Omo, hoping no other parent endures the same heartbreak.

Because sometimes, it’s not danger we fear most — it’s the danger hiding in our own homes.
