A community is grieving after track and field star Natalie Black died suddenly in her sleep.

The 19-year-old Belhaven University sophomore had just celebrated a personal best in triple jump, reaching 11.01 meters. Her proud father recalled her saying, “I’m going to make you proud—and she did that.” Her coach added, “She walked over smiling, ‘I know you saw that, coach.’”

Hours later, after a joyful day with family, Natalie lay down for a nap and never woke up. Her mother wrote, “She simply laid on the couch for a little nap and never woke up.” Friends and teammates described her as a shining light whose smile lifted everyone around her.

Loved ones gathered at a candlelit vigil, sharing memories and running a lap in her honor. The Mississippi Track and Field Youth Club called her “a true champion” whose legacy will inspire future generations.
