Eemeli Peltonen, 30, a rising member of the Social Democratic Party, died inside the Parliament building on Tuesday morning. Police confirmed there was no suspicion of foul play. Emergency services, including ambulances and fire crews, rushed to the scene around 11am.

Peltonen had spoken openly in June about serious kidney problems and a bacterial infection. In a heartfelt post, he shared: “To control the bacteria, I was started on an intravenous antibiotic course. At the same time, treatment for my kidney problems will continue.”
His death shocked colleagues and supporters across Finland. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo called it “really sad news” and said politics would pause out of respect. Parliament Speaker Jussi Halla-aho added: “Peltonen was a well-liked and respected colleague across party lines.”

Peltonen entered politics at just 18 and quickly rose to become the youngest city council chairman in his hometown. Friends and fellow politicians described him as dedicated, talented, and full of promise.
His passing is a painful reminder of the struggles many face silently. How can we better support those carrying hidden battles?
