Two dead and dozens ill in listeria outbreak linked to cheese sold worldwide

A food scare is spreading across Europe after cheese linked to a deadly listeria outbreak was recalled. Two people in France have died, and at least 21 others became seriously ill from contaminated dairy.

Health officials warn the affected soft cheese may have been sold in more than 30 countries, including the UK. “This is a serious health risk. Do not eat these products,” authorities urged. Cases have also been confirmed in Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway.

The cheese, made from pasteurized cow’s and goat’s milk by French company Chavegrand, was recalled worldwide. All batches made before June 23, 2025, are affected and carry the health mark FR 23.117.001. Shoppers are told to check labels carefully and return or dispose of any products.

A company spokesperson admitted staff were “stunned by this news” and promised stricter safety checks. This outbreak is a harsh reminder: food safety can never be taken for granted. Do you think enough is being done to protect consumers?
