A tragic accident on July 28, 2025, claimed the lives of two young girls after a sailboat crashed into a barge in Biscayne Bay near Miami Beach. The boat, part of a youth sailing program, carried six children and one counselor when it collided near Monument Island at 11:15 a.m.
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that two girls, ages seven and 13, died at the scene. Two others, ages eight and 11, were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. A 12-year-old girl and a 19-year-old counselor survived the crash.
One child at the scene said, “All the kids went flying off.” Another added, “It was super sad and super scary.” Emergency crews from multiple agencies responded quickly and rescued the children from the water.
The Miami Yacht Club called the loss “unthinkable” and closed all activities. The Coast Guard is now leading the investigation. Commander Frank Florio stated, “We grieve with the families and are committed to finding answers.” Our hearts go out to all those affected.
