What sex is like with a stoma bag: Woman reveals how her relationship with her husband has changed since multiple surgeries that left her intimate areas looking very different

Sam Cleasby thought her sex life was over after major surgeries. The 43-year-old mother from East Yorkshire has Inflammatory Bowel Disease. However, she now says her intimacy with her husband Timm is better than ever.

A Difficult Medical Journey

Doctors diagnosed Sam with the bowel condition back in 2004. Later, she had 12 major operations over many years. Surgeons removed her large intestine and fitted a stoma bag in 2013. One operation led to sepsis and a coma.

Overcoming Body Confidence Issues

The surgeries left Sam with nerve damage and chronic pain. She even tried to hide her body from her husband. Later, she realized she had to relearn how her body worked.

“It’s basically like learning to drive a completely different car.”

Finding New Ways Forward

Sam and Timm started using sex toys to improve their intimacy. They bought clitoral stimulators and special cushions to help with core strength. These tools acted as a game-changer for the couple. Now, they are empty-nesters with three grown children.

Breaking the Disability Taboo

Society often thinks disabled people do not have sex lives. However, Sam uses her Instagram to challenge these old ideas. She believes being open and honest helps lead a happier life. Finally, she encourages others with disabilities to explore what works for them.
