Lauren Wasser was a healthy 24-year-old when her life changed forever. Despite following all the recommended tampon guidelines, she developed toxic shock syndrome (TSS), a rare but deadly condition. Within hours, she was found unconscious — just “10 minutes from death.”
Doctors gave her a 1% chance of survival. She endured kidney failure, two heart attacks, and irreversible tissue damage. Her right leg and part of her left foot were amputated. In 2018, the pain forced her to amputate her left leg too.

Wasser’s terrifying experience proves TSS can strike even with correct tampon use. “People think they’re invincible, but no one is off limits,” she said. “It takes one toxin, and your organs start shutting down.”
Now known as the “girl with the golden legs,” Wasser has become a successful model and advocate for menstrual health. She urges others to talk openly about TSS and stay informed. “Knowledge is key,” she says. “Have the conversations, check in with each other. This can save lives.”
