Julija Adlesic thought one brutal stunt would solve her money problems. Instead, it landed her in prison.
In 2019, the Slovenian woman and her boyfriend allegedly planned a shocking scheme at their home in Ljubljana. Prosecutors said Julija used a circular saw to cut off her left hand above the wrist, then rushed to hospital — leaving the hand behind.
Police didn’t believe it was an accident. They recovered the severed hand and built a case around what they said was an attempt to claim a massive insurance payout — reported to be around $1.1 million.

In court, prosecutors argued the plan was carefully set up. Julija had taken out policies with several insurers the year before and could have received a large payment quickly. They also pointed to evidence that her boyfriend had searched online for information about prosthetic hands shortly before the incident.
Julija insisted she didn’t do it on purpose, saying no one would choose to be permanently injured. But in 2021, she and her boyfriend — along with his parents — entered guilty pleas as part of a deal with prosecutors.
Her boyfriend, Sebastien Abramov, was sentenced to more than two years in prison. Julija was initially given three years, but that term was later reduced.

She was released in 2022 after serving part of her sentence, spending about a year behind bars.
