105-year-old Louisiana woman sets world record in 100-meter dash: ‘It’s worth living longer’

Julia Hawkins, 107, known as “the Hurricane,” keeps smashing age stereotypes. In 2021, at 105, she broke the world record for the fastest 100-meter run at the Louisiana Senior Games. Undeterred by age, she recently competed again, showing unwavering determination.

Starting her running journey at 100, Hawkins exceeded expectations set by her child, completing the 100-yard dash in under 100 seconds. Despite aiming for under a minute in 2021, she finished in just over 62 seconds due to challenging weather.

Reflecting on her victory, Hawkins highlighted the scarcity of older athletes, saying, “When I started running, there were only a few, and they were not really athletes. Just older women trying to do something different.”

Although missing her one-minute goal, Hawkins secured the title for the fastest 100-meter dash in the 105+ years category, breaking the world record. Beyond running, she finds joy in gardening and cherishing time with family, urging others to appreciate life’s simple wonders. Her journey showcases resilience and the ability to find joy regardless of age.
