Dabney Coleman, known for his roles in “9 to 5” and “Tootsie,” passed away at 92 on May 16 at his Santa Monica home, confirmed by his daughter Quincy. “My father crafted his time here on Earth with a curious mind, a generous heart and a soul on fire with passion, desire and humor,” Quincy said. Coleman is survived by his sister, Beverly, his four children, and five grandchildren.

Coleman’s career spanned over six decades with roles in films like “9 to 5,” “Tootsie,” and “You’ve Got Mail.” On TV, he starred in “Buffalo Bill” and “Boardwalk Empire,” appearing in over 60 projects. Known for playing antagonistic characters, Coleman linked his affinity for these roles to his childhood.

In a 1984 interview, Coleman shared, “Since I was a kid I played that role…I was very small until I got out of college.” His career turning point came with his role in “9 to 5.” “The girls were so supportive of me, and included me in everything,” he explained. He played another memorable character in “Tootsie” and voiced Principal Prickly on “Recess.”

Coleman received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2014 and was a six-time Emmy nominee, winning once. Reflecting on his roles, Coleman said, “It isn’t me…That’s just a guy that I’m playing.” His spirit will continue to shine through his work and loved ones.
