Sha’Carri Richardson, born in Dallas, Texas, discovered her passion for running early. Raised by her aunt and grandmother, she excelled in track under her high school coach Lauren Cross. “People would say, ‘That little girl, she’s running so fast?'” Lauren recalled. Sha’Carri broke Texas state records and became the top female sprint recruit in 2018. At Louisiana State University, she set a collegiate record in the 100 meters, which led her to turn professional.
Sha’Carri is celebrated for her speed and distinctive style, often seen with bold hairstyles and long nails. Despite criticism, she confidently stated, “I didn’t know the weight of my hair or the length of my nails impact my legs going up & down but OKAYYYYY.” Her unique flair has made her a standout figure in athletics.
In 2021, Sha’Carri faced a setback when she was suspended from the Olympics for testing positive for THC. She admitted, “I know what I did…and I still made that decision.” Despite missing the Olympics, she made a historic comeback, winning gold in the 100 meters at the 2023 World Championships with a time of 10.65 seconds.
Sha’Carri has been open about her sexuality and surviving an abusive relationship. Her grandmother’s support was pivotal, teaching her resilience. “Don’t start nothing and don’t finish it,” her grandmother advised. Sha’Carri’s journey, marked by perseverance and a strong sense of identity, continues to inspire many.
