Toronto Plane Crash: Survivor Describes What He Saw as Air Traffic Audio Is Released

The Crash
Delta Air Lines Flight 4819 from Minneapolis crashed while landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport on February 17, 2025. The plane skidded sideways on Runway 23, flipped onto its roof, and caught fire. “The aircraft there’s upside down and burning,” a responder reported. Passengers were left hanging upside down as smoke filled the cabin. Despite multiple injuries, all 80 people on board survived.

Emergency Response
First responders arrived within minutes, extinguishing flames and evacuating passengers. “Just so you’re aware, there’s people also walking around the aircraft there,” an observer noted. Fire Chief Todd Aitken confirmed 18 people were hospitalized, including a child, though none had life-threatening injuries.

Survivor Accounts
John Nelson described the chaos: “There was a big fireball on the left side of the plane. When it finished, I was upside down.” Another passenger, Pete Koukov, recalled, “We were sideways, and then we were upside down hanging like bats.”

Investigation & Safety
Investigators are analyzing flight data, weather conditions, and pilot actions. “A strong gust at the wrong moment could have easily caused the aircraft to tip,” pilot Aaron Murphy explained. Aviation experts credit modern aircraft design for preventing a worse outcome. “It’s amazing that we’re still here,” Nelson reflected.
