Grandmother sentenced after baby left in hot car dies less than a year after another grandchild died while in her care

A Florida grandmother, Tracey Nix, has been sentenced to five years in prison after her 7-month-old granddaughter, Uriel Schock, died in a hot car in November 2022.

Nix had taken Uriel to lunch, then returned home, leaving the baby strapped in the back seat as outdoor temperatures reached 90°F. She told police she “just forgot” the child was in the car, saying, “I didn’t have anything specific on my mind… I just forgot.” She went inside to talk to her dog and practice piano.

Uriel’s grandfather found the unresponsive infant and performed CPR, but the baby died from hyperthermia.

This tragedy occurred less than a year after another grandchild, 16-month-old Ezra Schock, drowned under Nix’s care. The toddler wandered into a pond after she fell asleep.

At sentencing, Nix said, “I literally forgot for a long period of time. I’m broken about what happened.” Her daughter, Kaila Nix-Schock, told her in court, “I still love you. I hate this… but it doesn’t change my heart.”

Judge Brandon Rafool stated, “Uriel is not an isolated incident… I do not believe she is showing remorse.”
