Important rule that could save you from shark attack after ‘biggest great white shark ever’ recorded resurfaces in US tourist hotspot

Shark season has arrived in the US, and recent encounters are raising alarm. Just this month, the biggest great white shark ever recorded—nicknamed Contender—was spotted near the Florida and Georgia coasts. Meanwhile, a nine-year-old girl nearly lost her hand to a shark bite while snorkeling off Boca Grande, Florida.

Experts stress simple steps can help prevent attacks. Dr. Harley Newton from OCEARCH warns swimmers to avoid shiny jewelry, stay close to shore, and never swim alone. “If you see jumping fish, move away—they attract sharks,” Newton advises.

If you do spot a shark, don’t panic. Renowned conservationist Ocean Ramsey says to stay calm: “Face the shark, appear large, and back away slowly.” Avoid splashing or quick movements, which can provoke curiosity.

Although shark encounters remain rare, following these tips can reduce risk and keep beach days safe. Respect the ocean—it’s home to these powerful creatures.
