A New Pope Has Been Elected: Here’s What We Know About Leo XIV — The Humble Chicago Schoolboy Who Left Home in 8th Grade

Humble Beginnings
Born Robert Francis Prevost in 1955 in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV grew up in a devout Catholic family. Known for his discipline, intelligence, and quiet faith, he entered seminary after eighth grade and later joined the Augustinian order.

A Life of Service
Prevost studied math, theology, and canon law, eventually becoming a missionary in Peru. There, he served in poor communities, led parishes, and trained future priests. His leadership led to appointments as bishop and then prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops in Rome.

A Historic Election
On May 8, 2025, following the death of Pope Francis, Prevost was elected the 267th pope—the first American and Augustinian to hold the title. From the Vatican balcony, he greeted the world with, “Peace be with all of you.”

A Pope for the People
Known for humility, balance, and a deep connection to global communities, Pope Leo XIV brings pastoral heart and administrative experience to a divided Church. His election signals continuity with Francis’s vision—and hope for unity among 1.4 billion Catholics.
