Tagle Tops Public Polls
Ahead of Pope Francis’ succession, many hoped Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle would be the next pope. Readers admired his humility, warmth, and shared values with Francis. “He’s as humble and simple as Pope Francis,” one commenter said. Known as “Chito,” Tagle, 67, leads the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelisation and is beloved for his global outreach and joyful demeanor.
A Surprise Outcome
Despite public support, the College of Cardinals elected American Cardinal Robert Prevost as the new pope on May 8, 2025. Now Pope Leo XIV, he is the first American to lead the Catholic Church. White smoke and cheers marked the moment in St. Peter’s Square.
A Message of Peace
In his first address, Pope Leo XIV said, “Peace be with you… God loves you all, and evil will not prevail.” Known for balancing progressive outreach with doctrinal conservatism, he brings both experience and a fresh perspective to the papacy.
A New Chapter Begins
While Tagle wasn’t chosen, his influence remains. Pope Leo XIV’s election signals both change and continuity for the Church’s 1.4 billion followers.
