Michel de Grece, known as Prince Michael, passed away at 85 in Athens, as reported by Ekathimerini on July 28. The Greek prince, the last living grandson of King George I of Greece and first cousin to the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, had close ties to the British royal family.

In 1965, Michel renounced his royal status to marry Marina Karella, an artist and commoner, marking a significant break from royal tradition. The couple had two daughters and five grandchildren. Michel chose to stay in Greece despite the failed 1967 counter-coup, showing his dedication to his homeland.

As a historian, Michel wrote extensively on Greek history, the Ottoman Empire, and European royalty. He shared his insights on the British monarchy, saying, “I do not envy him at all, really – poor guy. And he does it with dedication, with a sense of humor. She, too. But I would not like that job at all.”

Michel cherished his family and his adventurous life. “I created my own family, whom I adore—my wife, children, and grandchildren. My life has been one of experiences, of discoveries. And I’m still very curious.” Funeral arrangements for Michel are yet to be announced.
