Olympics Viewers Name 5 Reasons Sha’Carri Richardson Lost Gold in the Semifinal: ‘She Never Had a Chance’

Millions watched Sha’Carri Richardson compete in the women’s 100m semifinal at the Paris Olympics on August 3. Despite her best efforts, she was defeated by Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia. Social media users cited five reasons for her loss.

First, many viewers believed Richardson was overly nervous. “She seemed VERY nervous which is understandable but STILL got a SILVER!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾,” commented one Instagram user. Another said, “She [needs] to get out of her head I can tell how nervous she was 🤦🏾♂️.”

Second, Richardson’s slow start was highlighted. Observers noted her stance and slow beginning, with comments like, “Got to have a quicker start because it was too much separation to make up!” and, “[Her] start was well…. Bad.”

Third, some thought she was too distracted by her fame and a recent Vogue commercial. One critic said, “Overconfidence says hi,” while another remarked, “All this noise just to win a silver medal.”

Fourth, the rainy weather on race day was believed to affect her performance. An admirer noted, “[Rain didn’t] help but silver medalist and world champion still 🔥🔥🔥,” and another added, “I’m blaming the rain tbh.”

Lastly, Richardson’s inability to warm up properly due to a rule change impacted her performance. Television Jamaica reported she and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce were delayed entry to the warm-up track. A fan stated, “I hate that she wasn’t able to warm up properly… But the fact that she was still able to get silver is amazing.”

Despite these challenges, Richardson remains confident, saying, “I’m not back, I’m better.”
