Renna O’Rourke, 19, died on June 1 after attempting a TikTok trend known as “dusting,” where users inhale aerosol sprays to get high. She suffered sudden sniffing death syndrome and was declared brain dead after a week in the ICU. “She never regained consciousness,” her devastated mother, Dana, said.
Renna’s parents, Dana and Aaron O’Rourke, are now speaking out to prevent more tragedies. “She was vivacious and caring,” Dana said. Her dad recalled, “She always said, ‘I’m gonna be famous,’ and sadly, this isn’t how we wanted it.”
“Dusting” is cheap, odorless, and easy to access — often slipping past parents undetected. “There’s no ID required, and it doesn’t show up on drug tests,” Dana warned. ICU doctor Randy Weisman added, “One huff can replace oxygen in the lungs and cause organ failure.”
The O’Rourkes launched a GoFundMe, raising over $10,000 for medical costs and awareness. Aaron described Renna as “the light in every room.” Their goal now: ensure no other family suffers the same heartbreak.
