People rewatching the 1978 musical Grease are branding it as “sexist,” “misogynistic,” and “problematic.” Despite its iconic status and memorable songs, viewers today are highlighting issues that were overlooked when it was first released.
Critics point out the age discrepancies between actors and their characters, such as Olivia Newton-John being 29 while playing a 17/18-year-old. The song “Summer Nights” features the line “Did she put up a fight,” which some find uncomfortable, suggesting non-consensual behavior.
Social media users are vocal about their concerns. One viewer said, “Sorry I loved Grease when I was a kid, however, it’s just too problematic these days.” Another commented, “Grease singing ‘Did she put up a fight?’ pretty much ruins the whole movie for me now aside from all the other problematic stuff.”
However, some defend Grease. Olivia Newton-John responded to criticism in 2020, saying, “It’s a story from the 50s where things were different. Everyone forgets that, in the end, he changes for her, too. There’s nothing deep in there about the #MeToo movement. It was a fun love story.”
