Dolly Parton, the country music legend, is one of twelve children born to Robert Lee and Avie Lee Parton. Growing up in poverty in Tennessee, Dolly’s family was deeply musical, which influenced her career. “I grew up in a very musical family,” she shared with PEOPLE in 2020.
Many of Dolly’s siblings also pursued music. Her eldest sister, Willadeene, explored gospel before turning to writing. Stella, another sister, followed Dolly’s footsteps into country music, achieving several hits. Dolly’s brother Randy, who passed away in 2021, had a successful music career and collaborated with Dolly on several songs.
Despite the musical background, not all siblings chose music. Some, like David and Coy, led private lives away from the spotlight. Larry, the ninth child, tragically died shortly after birth, a story Dolly shared in her movie “Coat of Many Colors.”
Dolly’s youngest sister, Rachel, initially pursued music before transitioning to acting. She starred in the “9 to 5” television series, based on Dolly’s famous song and movie. Dolly and Rachel recently collaborated on a cookbook, showcasing their love for cooking.
The Parton family’s story reflects their deep bond and diverse talents, from music to writing and beyond.
